Maison Etchebehere is a beautiful Basque home set in a unique location in a valley with almost 360-degree views of the surrounding hills, forest and river. The serenity is felt the moment you pass through the entry gates. You will enjoy waking in the morning to see horses and donkeys in the neighbouring paddocks and the peace that comes when you capture the views across the valley and river. You may take the opportunity to have meals prepared with fresh ingredients picked from the garden that day and authentic local produce purchased daily from the markets. Maison Etchebehere was constructed in 1783. A former splendid farm it fell into disrepair. Uninhabited for over 30 years it was almost a ruin when Corinne who is French and Richard who is Australian purchased it in 2009. The home has been luxuriously restored at the same time keeping all the charm and characteristics of a Basque house. Etchebehere is a derivation of the Basque word etxea, which can mean home or to belong. In Pays Basque, there is a strong connection between the home and those who live in the home. Maison Etchebehere and Corinne and Richard have such a connection and together they combine to ensure visitors receive a warm welcome and are made to feel at home. Guests during their stay will experience that sense of belonging and what it is to be a “local”.
